State Of the Sector
Community Southwark’s State of the Sector report
was launched in 2023 as a programme of action for Southwark’s VCS and partners. It focused on three key areas with clear recommendations in each.
Funding
A Funding Working Group to bring together funders and VCS groups to implement the State of the Sector funding principles around unrestricted, multi-year funding with easier applications and monitoring, and more open and transparent decisions. 19 of the borough’s top 23 funders have signed up.

Premises
A role, funded by United St Saviour’s and Southwark Council Planning and Property department, started in January 2024, with the aim of improving access to affordable and accessible space for the VCS. It has gathered and matched requests for space with existing premises and is working to influence the policies of the council and other landowners. Southwark Voice has produced a ‘collaborative commissioning’ report to recommend how public sector contracts can be done differently. The Mental Health Network is now considering forming a consortium.

Our Business Volunteering Officer is building relationships between charities, community groups, and businesses in Southwark. Over the last year, the role secured £200,000 in corporate pro bono time. Full details in the learning report
