Welcoming Winnie, our new Chair of Trustees

Winnie says: "I have deep belief that we are seeing rapid adjustments in the recognition of the voluntary sector, and using my leadership skills I wish to help connect the various community groups and stakeholders into functioning as one kaleidoscope, which ensures no voice is left unheard."
We are delighted that Winnie Baffoe has been elected the new Chair of Trustees for Community Southwark, the umbrella organisation for charities and community groups in the borough.

Winnie has 15 years of charity leadership experience. She spearheaded Mummies Republic as a service which focused on marginalised single unit households who found it difficult to thrive in more formal environments. She is specialised in decoding the intersectionalities of poverty and, through community engagement, understands how to provide positive foundations for marginalised households.

She has also served as a school governor at John Ruskin Primary School and currently leads project governance and safeguarding at the South London Mission. For the past two years, she has been a Voluntary and Community Sector member of the Partnership Southwark Strategic Board which brings together health and social care providers to tackle health inequalities.

Community Southwark has over 1,000 Voluntary and Community Group members. We have over 60 years’ experience of offering free services and making connections, including:

  • Advice and training (e.g. governance, funding, evaluation and impact)
  • Networks to bring groups together and influence decision makers
  • Tailored support for ethnic minority led groups
  • Information sharing through e-bulletins, social media, venues and funding databases
  • Advertising, matching, and celebrating volunteers, including Healthwatch Ambassadors and corporate volunteer

On her election as Chair, Winnie said “I am experienced in speaking on behalf of communities to statutory partners and have good relations with local funders”

“I have deep belief that we are seeing rapid adjustments in the recognition of the voluntary sector, and using my leadership skills I wish to help connect the various community groups and stakeholders into functioning as one kaleidoscope, which ensures no voice is left unheard.”

I am very grateful to the work done by my predecessor, Nicola Howard, and I look forward to building on her excellent work with the staff, trustees, volunteers and members of Community Southwark.”
