Toby Bevan, a Communications Support Volunteer with our Southwark Food Action Alliance, tells us about the skills he’s developed and what difference volunteering has made to him.Which team do you volunteer with? Southwark Food Action Alliance Volunteer role?Communications Support |
Why did you decide to get involved with this volunteer team role? What did you want to get out of being involved?
I recently moved into the area (Peckham) and felt it was important to do my part for the community which now surrounds me. Food security has always been something that I have been aware of, without ever fully understanding the issue – now I have the opportunity to work towards positive developments within this space.
What skills have you developed through your experience of volunteering with the volunteer team?
Creating newsletters and developing the website on various online platforms has been a really useful skillset to work on.
What have you learnt as a result of volunteering with Community Southwark?
A greater understanding the scale of food security problems within Southwark, as well as learning of the commitment of Community Southwark colleagues to address this issue!
As a volunteer, what do you do in your role?
I provide communications support to the Southwark Food Action Alliance, assisting with newsletters, blogs and website development, as well as developing engagement programmes for future outreach.
Why do you like volunteering & what difference does it make to you?
A sense of community is hugely important and to be able to support those who are most vulnerable within my own is a very rewarding experience.
