Russ from Unity Works shares the benefits of Community Southwark’s support

#OurImpact: ''Unity Works partners with organisations like Community Southwark because they are a major source of exciting and innovative opportunities in the Borough'' - (published 25 Feb 2021)

As a team specialising in support Southwark Residents with Learning Disabilities/Difficulties and those with Autism (LDDA), Unity Works partners with organisations like Community Southwark because they are a major source of exciting and innovative opportunities in the Borough.

Many of our clients have looked to volunteering as a way to keep active and vital during the pandemic, as well as to make a contribution to their community. In addition, it teaches them life skills in communication, organisation and gives them a chance to try new experiences and make new friends.

Community Southwark’s website is very LDDA friendly and we encourage our clients to use the site to look at ideas for volunteering, campaigns to get involved in and ways to benefit their local area. One of our clients went to support Pembroke House as a rider delivering food to the community and progressed to win the prestigious Southwark Stars Disabled Volunteer of The Year Award 2020. He was thrilled.

We try to attend any Community Southwark conferences as they are always well run and a mine of useful information. Also, we feel that if we make representations on behalf of the LDDA residents, we are listened to and respected. We enjoy a productive relationship with Community Southwark and look forward to that continuing going forward.

As a result of attending the Staying Safe, Staying Connected Conference (19 Jan 2021), we are now better placed to co-ordinate with the various support agencies that some clients have, providing information and guidance in a joined up way. It certainly helped ‘fill in the gaps’ that we had about the processes in Southwark“.
