July’s Southwark Volunteer Story

Every month we’ll be highlighting an inspiring volunteer story from an organisation in Southwark. This month we’re telling Clive’s story, a volunteer at HMS Belfast.

The iconic London landmark, HMS Belfast, is part of the Imperial War Museum.  Founded while the First World War was still raging, volunteers help the Imperial War Museum share the stories of lives affected by conflict, using their skills and experiences to bring the museum to life.

Clive is a Discover Volunteer, part of the warm and welcoming face of the museum helping visitors in the discovery and orientation of the site. Isabelle, team member at Imperial War Museum described the difference Clive makes at the museum.

“Clive has been an incredible volunteer with us, continually going above and beyond to support visitors and other volunteers. He ensures that there is always a good atmosphere on board by being welcoming, funny and friendly. He has recently created his own talk as well which he now delivers to excited visitors on board.”

Clive doesn’t only ensure visitors to the ship enjoy their visit but plays an important part of in the team by making sure new and established volunteers feel at home: “by sharing his knowledge and resources with the rest of the team and he has also shown his dedication to IWM by giving thoughtful suggestions and ideas, many of which we ended up implementing.”

“He engages with everyone in a friendly and approachable manner and tries to make the ship a better place by being a team player.   He is just a really good person always thriving to make the ship a better place for everyone.”
