It's #VolunteersWeek! Hear Candy's story
#VolunteersWeek2019

Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK.

It runs from the 1- 7 June and it's an opportunity to celebrate volunteerig in all it's diversity across the UK, and for us, all of our wonderful volunteers in Southwark.

Candy volunteers at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill. Candy tells us here how she started on her volunteer journey with King's:

"My name is Candida but people call me Candy.

I am a Volunteer at King’s College Hospital at Denmark Hill with my dog Gnasher who is a small black Lhasapoo dog. We have been volunteering for nearly 18 months and we enjoy every single minute of it.

I have a chromosome disorder (18p deletion) and now osteoarthritis in my knees. For 26 years, I worked for Lambeth Council in the One O'clock Clubs for children under 5, and older children in the school holidays.

King’s College Hospital has helped and looked after me since I was 7 and I have always wanted to give something back as a way of saying thank you. So when Gnasher and I passed the Pets as Therapy test, I followed up an email asking for Pets as Therapy volunteers at King’s College Hospital.

We volunteer one morning a week on the Health and Aging Wards and we have also just started going to the Paediatric Ward once a month. Gnasher is very popular with the patients and staff and he seems to enjoy his visits. The Volunteers at King’s are much appreciated and very well looked after."
