Southwark Council wants to hear if you’ve had a pregnancy in the past five years, from your family members, or if you’re a professional delivering maternity services in Southwark.
Women from Black ethnic groups are four times more likely to die in pregnancy than those from white groups, and women from Asian ethnic backgrounds are almost twice as likely.
These startling stats are from a 2023 UK report on maternal deaths. Southwark is one of the most diverse boroughs in the country. 40% of our population are born outside the UK. This means these inequalities are likely to affect a higher proportion of our residents.
As a result, Southwark Council has set up a commission to look at Southwark’s maternity care, and they want to hear from you.
