Walworth Living Room

Our new community café, the Walworth Living Room, is open to everyone and is a place for eating, learning, playing, working, sharing a cuppa and getting to know your neighbours. We are looking for reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to help run the café.

When: Wednesdays (more days to follow)
Where: Pembroke House, 80 Tatum Street, SE17 1QR

About Pembroke House

Pembroke House is a lively and friendly community space in Walworth. We run and host numerous activities including a music academy, a gardening club, a dance group for people with learning difficulties, a lunch club for older people, and English classes for Spanish speakers.

Key Tasks

Volunteers have a key role in running the Walworth Living Room. Currently open on Wednesdays, we are working towards being open six days a week in the longer term. We need volunteers to help in the kitchen and to help host the community space so that guests feel welcomed, comfortable and at home in the space, meet new people, have meaningful interactions, and make social connections, and feel a sense of possibility and the opportunity to act upon it.

Kitchen Role
  • Help with food preparation

  • Clear plates, stack the dishwasher and serve food

  • Clear up and put things away after the café.

Hosting Role
  • Welcome guests: Greet people as they arrive, encourage them to feel at home, explain that they can help themselves to tea and coffee and food (if available) and that donations are welcome.

  • Make connections: Engage people in conversation with open questions about what they are interested in and why they have come. Be aware of the interests of other regulars and help to connect people.

  • Create a sense of possibility and opportunity: Encourage people to feel that the Walworth Living Room is their space and to give feedback and make suggestions. Encourage ideas for new clubs and be aware of existing projects including those at Pembroke House. Encourage regulars to help newcomers settle in and help people understand what it takes to run the space.
