This session examines the experience of parents who abuse substances or have dual diagnosis presentations and its impact on parenting capacity and children’s development.
Objectives
- Discuss the prevalence, nature, clinical signs, and symptoms of the most common substances used by adults
- Explore the impact of maternal substance misuse, including’recreational’ drugs, opiates, and stimulants on pregnancy and foetal and child development
- Discuss the types of risks and impulsive behaviours presented by parents who use substances and examine the impact on children and young people
- Examine relevant safeguarding issues of children affected by parental substance misuse
- Explore effective early intervention and local parenting programmes for parents, carers, and children affected by substance misuse
