We can’t truly celebrate International Women’s Day in Southwark until women are equal with each other.
Join us for our International Women’s Day event 2023. Organised by Wave of Peace in collaboration with Excel Beyond Barriers, and other community groups in Southwark and across London.
International Women’s Day 2023 has the theme “’Embrace Equity’”. We encourage men and women to attend this important event to discuss this year’s theme and to think, act and fully embrace equity. This event also celebrates and recognise the achievements of Black, Asian and ethnic minorities women which are often overlooked and disregarded in Britain.
Why equity over equality needs to be prioritised?
Equity stands for fairness, yet what is fair is not necessarily equal, and what is equal is not necessarily fair. We need to recognise how different parts of a person’s identity – race, sex, religion, disability, class – can cause individuals to face different types of disadvantages or discrimination. This raises the uncomfortable fact that while the focus is on women battling for equality with men, still not all women are deemed to be equal with each other. Through an intersectional lens we can promote greater understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our communities.

There will be Middle Eastern Food and eclectic music from Arab, African and Latin American music and more.
