Exploring the prevalence, role, and impact of cultural stigmas affecting the mental health of children and families from Black and minority ethnic communities.
Objectives
- Explore the meaning of cultural stigmas and the impact of ‘race’, ethnicity, and spirituality on experiences of emotional distress
- Examine the impact of cultural, professional, institutional, structural, and historical victimisation and discrimination on cultural stigmas
- Explore some of the risks and challenges associated with negative cultural attitudes towards adult mental illness and neurodiversity in children
- Examine the role of cultural competence in developing strategies to overcome racial stereotyping and stigmas in mental health provision
- Examine personal, cultural, professional, and organisational barriers to children and their families accessing mental health support
- Identify strategies to improve safeguarding and overcome stigmatising mental distress among Black and minority ethnic communities
