This session will explore how racial discrimination impacts on lived experiences and different types of mental disorders, and the implications for practice and safeguarding.
Objectives
- Explore the historical and intergenerational impact of ‘race’, culture , ethnicity, and spirituality on experiences of emotional distress
- Examine the spheres of victimisation and oppression and the impact on mental health difficulties that BME children and families experience
- Examine cultural, professional, institutional, structural, and historical victimisation and discrimination
- Explore some of the risks and challenges associated with negative cultural attitudes towards adult mental illness and neurodiversity in children from Black and minority communities
