No one knows what percentage of charity trustees are disabled at a national level. However, there are local studies which show significant under-representation, for example, Diversity and inclusion in organisational leadership: Evidence from Third Sector Trends 2020 and Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, 2020.
Given the well-documented under-representation of disabled people at other leadership levels in society, and considering the disability employment gap, it is likely that disabled people are significantly under-represented at trustee level.

They will discuss questions including:
- The lack of data on disability representation on charity boards
- What are some of the barriers disabled people face when serving as trustees, and when looking to become a trustee in the first place?
- What can charities do to recruit and retain disabled trustees?
- How does disability intersect with other protected characteristics such as age and ethnicity on trustee boards?
- Is it likely that there is a higher percentage of disabled trustees in certain types of organisations (for example, the study cited above found that the percentage of chairs who are disabled falls as organisations get larger)?
About the session
