Free opportunity at Southbank Centre – Future Exhibition Makers
Are you aged 13 – 18 and curious about exhibition-making and curating?
They are looking for 15 London-based participants, from a diverse range of backgrounds and lived experiences, who are passionate about historic objects and images; who are interested in storytelling and communication; and who want to learn new skills related to archiving, curating and exhibition-making.
Join their Archive and Creative Learning teams for an intensive project to explore and uncover the history of events at Southbank Centre, and create an online exhibition to mark the 40th anniversary of the centre’s ‘open foyer’ policy. This was a groundbreaking policy introduced in 1983 by the Greater London Council to open up the foyers to the Royal Festival Hall, all day, seven days a week. Along with this came a range of free programming to include exhibitions, lunchtime chamber concerts, evening jazz performances, and access to facilities such as shops, bars and cafes. Although this now seems commonplace, in 1983, this was a very big step towards opening out public arts centres and making them more welcoming to the general public, regardless of whether they were coming to see a concert or not.
You will work together as a collective to gather materials and write stories for a digital online exhibition. You will also take over Southbank Centre’s social media channels to create a buzz around archive objects, past events and public experiences on site. You will work with a team of skilled archivists and exhibition-makers who will guide you through our collections and help you to interpret these in a fun way for new audiences.
This free opportunity, taking place weekly on Saturdays (in person at the Royal Festival Hall) and Tuesdays (online) across March 2023, is open to young people aged 13 – 18, regardless of experience or ability. No previous visual arts or history experience is necessary, just a curiosity to explore archive objects and create stories about these that capture the interest and imagination of the general public.
Come and discover your creative side, make new friends and unlock new skills!
Deadline for Application: 12 noon, 17 February 2023.
