South London and Maudsley Hospital Trust (SLaM) are looking to fund VCS groups to provide training to their mental health teams in Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.
In this session, run with Lewisham Local, the funders will address some of the barriers raised in a previous meeting, and will share details on how to apply for this opportunity, and what they are looking for in the answers.
About this opportunity
Improving mental health care for racialised and ethnically and culturally diverse communities has been a long-standing challenge for mental health services. They know in some cases, the poor quality of care and the inappropriate use of force, has resulted in serious harm and death in settings where racialised and ethnically and culturally diverse communities are overrepresented (especially Black / Black British communities).
South London and Maudsley is one of 4 National NHS Pilot sites for a new initiative called the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF), that looks to address these inequalities.
As part of this, SLaM are looking for community trainers to work with their teams in Lambeth, Lewisham or Southwark.
Southwark
The Southwark team are looking for a cultural humility trained group of Black Community Members, Service Users and Carers and Staff that will co-learn together looking at the complaints, incidents and compliments from services within Southwark, to see where and how they can tangibly change and attain equity in use of seclusion and restraint.
This Co-Learning Group will examine data on complaints/incidents through a racialised lens with a focus on the Black service user experience overall. The focus of the Group’s work will be on extracting the learning and ensuring it is used to change services for the better. If capacity allows, members of the Co-Learning Group could support individual staff as they handle specific complaints.
Proposals are requested (with pricing) for providing the first wave of training. Subject to the success, there is the potential for future waves of training for additional teams.

- Cultural Humility Programme
- Workshop for Black and Asian staff
- Cultural Humility online training
