We are excited to announce that The Silly Little Mouse participatory production will take place this summer on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June.
Bold Tendencies will host opera director Polly Graham’s production of The Silly Little Mouse, a cartoon-opera for children by Dmitri Shostakovich written under the suppressive thumb of a brutal state, starring a beautiful but dangerous black and white cat played by soprano Claire Booth.
Shostakovich’s original tale of farmyard animals and their unruly offspring will be sung in an English translation; re-framed, and presented in a contemporary urban and human context of parent/carer – child, and child-community relations, exploring the frustration that children feel as they increasingly long for freedom.
Over the course of one weekend, Loud Crowd and The Multi-Story Orchestra are unpacking Shostakovich’s 16 minute cartoon-opera with workshops for 8-14 year olds, designed to open up the process of making an opera, inviting participants to collaborate and become performers and co-creatives in an intensive, inventive rehearsal process.
Workshops will run from 11am to 5:30pm on Saturday and 11am to 6pm on Sunday, culminating in two performances on Sunday afternoon: a dress rehearsal and relaxed viewing for invited guests at 4:30pm, followed by a public performance at 5:30pm.
