The aim of the grant is to assist surplus food redistributors in overcoming challenges that they are currently facing in obtaining surplus food from food businesses (such as retailers and food manufacturers) and distributing this to people in need or those considered vulnerable.
The grant can be used to fund both capital and revenue costs associated with redistribution activities such as:
- access to surplus food through logistical collections
- sorting, storing, freezing, labelling / repackaging food, and
- onward distribution of food to charities or end beneficiaries
The programme is in the 2nd and 3rd phases:
Phase 2 is a £1m grant scheme and open to micro-to-small sized not-for-profit organisations that currently operate food redistribution activity. Grants of between £5,000 and £10,00 are available for capital and revenue costs.
Phase 3 is for existing medium-to-large-scale surplus food redistributors with grants of up to £50,000.
Applicants must have a genuine need for public funding support to assist them in overcoming any additional challenges as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. They should not be paying for the food or selling it to onward end beneficiaries.
