The Borough Free Fridge Volunteer

The Borough Free Fridge Volunteer

Food waste is a big issue in the UK and beyond. It’s estimated that a third of all food gets wasted. Most of this is avoidable and could have been eaten if better managed. The Borough Free will help cut food waste, build stronger bonds within the community and redistribute good quality food.

The Fridge volunteers are essential in running the fridge. There is a huge volume of food thrown away each week in our area – volunteers will ensure that this food is collected and redistributed. The more volunteers we have the more food we can collect and the more people we can help. Our vision is to have the fridge open daily for access – this will be dependent on having people to run it.

What day: Tuesday or Wednesday

When: Between 11am – 5pm

Minimum Commitment: 2 hours per week

Where: St George the Martyr Church, Borough High Street, SE1 1JA

About St George the Martyr

We are a Church of England Church. As well as worship we have a strong commitment to meeting the needs of our local community. We run programmes aimed at those in our area – a community café, foodbank, holiday hunger kids programme in the school holidays, host the Robes night-shelter in the winter, have a heritage outreach programme, hold weekly concerts and run a music academy for children. The Borough Free Fridge is a new project aimed at reducing food waste in the area and redistributing food to those who are food insecure. The Fridge will collect surplus food from local supermarkets and restaurants and be open to everyone who would like to take it.

Main activities/tasks:

In the morning/early afternoon duties will include visiting our partner stores and collecting food surplus and bringing it back to the Fridge. Current collections are done on foot but in the future we would like to partner with bigger stores where car pickups may be possible. Food will then need to be checked and stored safely, some goods may need to be bagged. Some good may need to be labelled with allergy information and dates.

Between 2pm and 5pm when the Fridge is open duties will include welcoming Fridge users, and offering hospitality (we would like tea and coffee and a chat to be a part of the service). Supervising Fridge use and keeping the area clean and hygienic. At the end of the session clearing away and checking if remaining food should be kept of disposed of.

We would also welcome volunteers who are interested in helping us find businesses to donate to the Fridge, want to get involved in local Fridge promotion, help organising events and fundraisers to support the Fridge and the local community, are interested in social media.
